Mux for Startups is Mux’s credit offer for early teams building video into their product. Startups get $500 in Mux credits to begin, and some investor-backed companies can get a larger package. We checked Mux’s official startup page and its programme announcement on 1 November 2026, and the details below come from those pages.
What you get
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Base credit | $500 in Mux credits |
| Larger packages | Available depending on your investors |
| Expiry | Credits must be used within 1 year of activation |
| Support | Help from Mux’s video team, and a product consultation with a Mux co-founder for some startups |
| Card | Not required to start building |
The credits go toward Mux’s usage-based video platform, which covers on-demand and live video, encoding, its player and video AI workflows. Mux also says its Data analytics product is free for Mux Video users, which is separate from the startup offer.
How far $500 goes depends on what you build. When Mux launched the programme in March 2022, it estimated $500 would cover about 300,000 streamed minutes, while noting that costs vary by product. Prices have likely changed since then, so check Mux’s current pricing page against your expected encoding, storage and delivery volumes.
Larger investor packages
Mux’s startup page says that, depending on your investors, you may be eligible for more than $500. It does not list amounts. The 2022 announcement named five firms with Mux credit packages: Y Combinator, Andreessen Horowitz, Pioneer Square Labs, Sweat Equity Ventures and Techstars. It also mentioned AWS Activate and Retool for Startups as routes to Mux benefits. Mux has not published current figures for any of these, so ask your investor or programme manager what their package is.
Who qualifies
Mux lists four conditions on its startup page:
- The offer is for startups only.
- You must not already be a Mux customer.
- You must be receiving Mux credits for the first time.
- Credits have to be used within 1 year of activation.
There is no published limit on company age, funding or headcount. The 2022 announcement said the programme is open to bootstrapped startups as well as those backed by venture capital or other investors.
How to apply
- Go to the Mux startups page and complete the “Apply for Mux credits” form.
- If you are backed by one of Mux’s partner firms or programmes, check their perks portal first, since the package may be larger. The 2022 post says AWS Activate members can find Mux in the Activate console, a16z portfolio companies in the a16z marketplace, and Retool users on Retool’s startup page.
- Once approved, activate the credits in your Mux account. The 1-year clock starts at activation.
Mux does not publish a review time. For portfolio perk partnerships or programme questions, the announcement lists a startups contact address at Mux.
Things to check before you apply
- Do not become a paying customer first. Existing customers are excluded, so apply before you put a card on file.
- Activate when you are ready to ship. The year starts at activation, so there is no benefit in activating months before launch.
- One grant per company. Mux only gives credits to first-time recipients, so pick the largest route available to you, whether that is the base offer or an investor package.
- Video costs scale quickly. $500 is enough to build and test, but live streaming or large libraries can use it up fast. Model your expected minutes before launch.
- Partner figures are not public. Do not assume a set amount from an accelerator package until your investor confirms it.
How it compares
Mux’s base credit is modest next to the five and six figure offers from cloud and observability providers, but there is no funding threshold, referral requirement or card needed to start. For a team testing whether video belongs in its product, $500 plus free access to Mux Data covers a working prototype. Startups backed by one of Mux’s partner investors should check for a larger package before using the standard form.
