AssemblyAI’s Startup Program is an open application for early-stage companies building products around speech and audio. Accepted startups get 12 months of recurring free credits for AssemblyAI’s voice AI APIs, discounted pricing that continues after the credits end, and direct help from the company’s engineers. We checked the official programme and pricing pages on 1 November 2026.
What you get
| Benefit | Details |
|---|---|
| Free credits | A fixed amount, recurring over 12 months. The dollar figure is not published. |
| Startup pricing | Discounted rates that continue after credits run out, with standard pricing phased in gradually |
| Engineering help | A dedicated Forward Deployed Engineer who contacts you in the first week |
| Product access | Access to AssemblyAI’s latest features |
| Marketing | Co-marketing opportunities and a community of voice AI builders |
What the credits cover
The credits apply to AssemblyAI’s core voice AI infrastructure. The official page names the Speech-to-text API, the Streaming speech-to-text API and the Dictation API, and says coverage extends beyond those three. It does not list every product, so confirm coverage for anything else you plan to use.
What they do not cover
AssemblyAI states that the discounted startup pricing does not apply to LLM Gateway. If you plan to use it, budget for that usage at standard rates.
The free tier, for comparison
Separate from the programme, every new AssemblyAI account gets $50 in free credits on signup with no credit card required. That is enough to prototype while your application is reviewed.
Who qualifies
AssemblyAI lists three conditions:
- Early stage. Pre-seed to Series A. Bootstrapped teams are welcome too.
- Voice or audio at the core. Any product where speech is central to what it does.
- Launching soon. Already in production, or shipping within six months.
Backing from a partner VC or accelerator is not required, but it speeds things up. AssemblyAI names Accel and Y Combinator among its partners.
How to apply
- Open the AssemblyAI Startup Program page and click Continue to start the application.
- Describe what you are building, your stage, and who backs you. No pitch deck is needed, and AssemblyAI says the form takes minutes.
- Wait for a decision. Standard reviews take up to one week. Portfolio companies of partner VCs and accelerators, including Accel and Y Combinator, are fast-tracked with decisions expected within 48 hours.
- Once approved, the credits arrive in your AssemblyAI console within 48 hours.
- Expect contact from your Forward Deployed Engineer during week one.
Things to check before you apply
- Ask for the exact amount. Because the credit figure is not published, confirm what your grant is worth and how it recurs (for example, monthly) once you are approved.
- Mind the 12-month window. The credits run for 12 months. Apply when you are close to building, not months before.
- LLM Gateway is excluded from the discount. If your product depends on it, cost that part separately.
- Speech has to be central. A product that only touches audio at the edges may not fit the “speech at its core” requirement.
- Use the signup credit first. The $50 signup credit lets you test accuracy and latency on your own audio before you commit.
How it compares
Compared with providers that route credits only through investors, AssemblyAI’s programme is open to bootstrapped teams and runs on a public form. The trade-off is transparency on value: the grant size is not published, whereas some speech AI rivals list a starting tier and a ceiling.
